I am pleased to share with you this special issue of Today, which celebrates Commencement and the stories of graduates who serve as an inspiration to all who “Enter to Learn.”

If I were to pick one word to describe Commencement 2015, it would be “transformation.” Indeed, the graduates who crossed the stage at the May 27 ceremony were stepping out of their former lives and into new lives, transformed right before our eyes.

The transformative powers of Commencement were obvious when I heard our two speakers. Dr. James M. Cherry, our Commencement speaker, told me before his speech that he was truly excited to be the speaker. And what a great job he did! Dr. Cherry shared his personal journey from being a college athlete to eventually obtaining a Ph.D.—and ultimately working in the STEM field.

Student speaker Rachael Boone did an outstanding job inspiring her peers. Her remarks were crafted, polished and delivered beautifully by this poised and confident student leader.

Many graduates were applauded for scholarships they received to attend four-year institutions. But, three exemplary students especially caught my attention. I selected them, based on recommendations from faculty and other eligibility criteria, to receive the President’s Excellence Awards.

I am exceedingly pleased at the progress of this college, and its faculty, staff and students. Together, our ability to transform lives is truly inspiring. I look forward to many new developments ahead in the new academic year. Until then, have a terrific, restful summer and thank you for everything you do to make Carroll a great place to work and to learn.
