College Holds Twenty-Second Commencement

0n Wednesday, May 27, 2015, Carroll Community College held its twenty-second Commencement ceremony at 3 p.m. at McDaniel College.

Commencement is an opportunity for students who graduated in August, December, and who applied to graduate in May, to celebrate the attainment of their degrees or certificates. Eighty-one students completed their programs in August, 231 graduated in December, and 353 students applied to graduate in May. Although all eligible students are invited to participate in the ceremony, 210 students crossed the stage.

The Commencement speaker was Dr. James M. Cherry, the scientific program director at a major federally- funded research facility in Maryland. His professional experience includes working to develop novel technologies in several areas of biomedical research, including genetics and genomics expression platforms.

Dr. Cherry serves as a scientific advisor for local high school seniors and college students that intern at his research facility. He serves on scientific advisory boards for several universities in Maryland. He has also been an adjunct professor at Hood College and Mt. St Mary’s University.

“We were honored to have a Commencement speaker of Dr. Cherry’s caliber and professional background. He is exceptionally engaging and at ease with students,” said Carroll President Dr. James D. Ball. “He inspired and motivated our graduates to continue to take bold steps in their personal and professional lives.”

Graduate Rachael Boone delivered the student response. Boone has been involved in an array of activities on campus, from being a Hill Scholar to a Student Ambassador to a student employee of the college. Rachael graduated with an associate’s degree in business administration and will transfer to a four-year university to complete her bachelor’s degree.
