College Offers Classes In New Sykesville Center

Carroll Community College is holding evening classes in the new Public Safety Education and Training Center in Sykesville. A new agreement allows the college to fulfill a long-standing goal to hold classes in South Carroll, the fastest-growing part of the County.

“This is a superb example of the value of partnership,” said Dr. Faye Pappalardo, president of the college. “The citizens of Carroll County will benefit from our ability to offer more classes, as our enrollment is at record levels and growing. We appreciate the willingness of the Police and Correctional Training Commissions to let us use their magnificent new facility.”

Under the partnership agreement, the Police and Correctional Training Commissions allow the college to offer classes at night at their Sykesville location. The college currently uses four technology-enhanced classrooms, Monday through Thursday evenings. Advising, books, and other student services are available at the Washington Road campus in Westminster.

This fall the college is holding four credit classes at Sykesville: General Psychology, Fundamentals of Public Speaking, Craft of Composition, and Introduction to Statistical Methods. A number of continuing education courses, which have start times throughout the fall, are also being held. These include Accounting Basics, Effective Leadership, Real Estate Principles and Practice, Spanish for Beginners, and Spanish for Construction Sites.

Five credit classes are scheduled for the spring term beginning the week of January 31, 2005: Health 101, History 101, Management 201, Sociology 101, and Speech 105.

The college and the Police and Correctional Training Commissions have worked together in an instructional partnership over the past several years to deliver the Police Entry Level Training Program (known informally as the Police Academy) to cadets. The college provides professional development for the Police Academy instructors and staff, basic skills assessment for the cadets, and access to the college’s Learning Resources Center for Academy instructors and cadets. The college awards continuing education units (CEUs) to cadets who successfully complete the training. The college also provides 39 credits to cadets who want to continue on toward an Associate in Applied Science degree in Law Enforcement at Carroll.
