College Participates in Maryland STEM Festival

Carroll Community College held a series of activities exploring STEM fields and interests during the state-wide Maryland STEM Festival in November. Partners joining the college included Carroll County Public Schools and the Carroll County Public Library.

On Thursday, Nov. 3 and Friday, Nov. 4 student members and faculty advisors of the college’s STEM Club and American Chemical Society chapter engaged participants in fun, hands-on activities to encourage curiosity in the fields.

On Saturday, Nov. 5, two activities geared towards prospective college students from the community were held. Explore STEM Pathway Study Options provided answers to questions about pathways to study STEM and what courses to take in high school to prepare for college. Current STEM college students shared their experiences. The second activity introduced them to the STEM Scholars Program. STEM Scholars are a group of 20 high-achieving students who receive one-on-one advising, a dedicated faculty mentor, a guaranteed transfer scholarship, and professional development and transfer planning.

The signature event was a panel of STEM professionals, including representatives from the National Cancer Institute and the Nationals Security Agency, held on Thursday morning, Nov. 10.

Carroll’s events were part of a larger initiative around the state in celebration of the Maryland STEM Festival. It provided inspirational, educational and accessible programming in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics around Maryland through ten days of collaborative and interactive activities.
