Well-MART Selected for National Recognition

The League for Innovation in the Community College has granted an award to Carroll Community College for innovation spearheaded by the Health, Fitness and Exercise Science Department. The award recognized the college Well-MART for wellness promotion through active learning.

Established over 30 years ago, the League’s Innovation of the Year award program was created as a way to recognize significant innovations at member colleges.

The award is designed to recognize faculty, staff and administrators at member colleges who have created and implemented innovative programs, practices, partnerships, policies and activities that improve the institution’s ability to serve students and the community. Each League Alliance college may submit one Innovation of the Year recipient to the League for recognition.

Increasing student engagement is the focus of the Well-MART, a co-curricular health activity that brings the campus community together and promotes interaction around a variety of health-related topics. Created as a mini-market of health activities, the Well-MART involves six areas where participants must do something active to learn more about their health and well-being. All of the learning experiences are highly interactive, which distinguishes it from information-only health fairs.

In addition to this accolade, Brendon Michaels, who oversees the college Fitness Center, was granted an Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Patriot Award. Carroll student Alexander Schmidt, a Fitness Center employee and member of the Army National Guard, nominated Michaels for his support of the national defense effort by providing employment to a National Guard member.

The Patriot Award reflects efforts to support Citizen Warriors through a wide-range of measures such as flexible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment, and caring for service-member families.

“Thank you for your continued support of our veterans and the men and women who serve in the National Guard and Reserve,” wrote Jean M. Hulet, state chair, Maryland ESGR Committee in a letter to Michaels.
