Adult Education Completers Celebrated at Recognition Ceremony

Thirty-four students in the Adult Education program operated by Carroll Community College were recognized in a ceremony on Friday, Oct. 25. This was the college’s sixth annual celebration for adults who have completed General Education Development (GED) or National External Diploma Programs (NEDP) and earned their high school diplomas.

Commissioner Haven Shoemaker offered congratulatory remarks. Families and friends of the students attended the ceremony, which was held in the theater in the Scott Center.

“I am extremely pleased with the accomplishments of this group of students,” said College President Dr. Faye Pappalardo. “They have worked very diligently to pursue their education and have achieved much success. I also wish to acknowledge the families and friends of our students for their wonderful support!”

The ceremony included mother-daughter graduates Lenora Beckette and Heather Carlyle. Beckette, 41, of Sykesville attended classes with her 24-year-old daughter. In addition to studying together, they took the GED test together and earned their diplomas together. Since then, Carlyle has completed Certified Nursing Assistant coursework at Carroll and plans to continue her education to become a Registered Nurse.

Student speakers presented their experiences in the program and discussed the importance of receiving their high school diplomas.

Richard Thames, a 47-year-old father of three of Westminster, took the GED test four times before passing in August, 2013 and attributes his diploma to giving him confidence that he can accomplish his other goals. He currently owns his own cleaning business and is also a minister; he aspires to become a Reverend and work with people struggling with addictions and homelessness.

Anne Marie Williams, a 46-year-old mother of two of Westminster, also spoke. Anne Marie completed the National External Diploma Program and received her diploma in July, 2013. She was motivated to earn her diploma to help her keep her job. Earning her diploma has boosted her self-esteem and she hopes to further her education to be able to work in case management or social work.

“Graduates complete the program, earning diplomas throughout the year. This event was an opportunity to publicly recognize their achievements and also to hear about what they have accomplished since receiving their diplomas. Graduates update us on new jobs, classes they are taking and how they have been able to talk about the importance of education more confidently with their children,” said Becki Maurio, director of the Adult Education Program.
