Pinning Ceremony Honors Nursing Graduates

Fifty-three nursing graduates received their ceremonial pins during a pinning ceremony in the Theater in the Scott Center on May 28 at 10:30 a.m. Later that day, they participated with the rest of the Class of 2008 in the Commencement Ceremony held at McDaniel College.

The pinning ceremony follows in the tradition of the Nightingale School of Nursing in London, the site of the first pinning ceremony in the 1860’s. Florence Nightingale was awarded for her service during the Crimean War. She chose to extend the honor of receiving a medal for excellence to her most outstanding graduates. In the years that followed, pinning ceremonies became more common.

Carroll Community College’s nursing pin was created by the class of 2005, based on the college’s seal. The seal illustrates the college’s mission of learning, symbolized by the book in the center of a triangle. The triangle depicts the interconnection of wisdom, truth, and knowledge. A double circle represents access to lifelong learning.

Other traditions celebrated at the ceremony are the wearing of the nursing cap, a lamp lighting, and recitation of the Florence Nightingale Pledge.

Student speaker Lauren Hutcheson delivered a keynote address to her fellow classmates. Nursing director Nancy Perry presented special awards and a slide presentation featuring photos of the graduates over their course of study was shown.
