2008 Graduate Wins Civil Air Patrol Award

Class of 2008 graduate and Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Cadet Colonel Jacob Reed was named Cadet of the Year for the Middle East Region of CAP during the recent regional conference held in Richmond, Virginia. Reed is a member of the Carroll Composite Squadron of the Maryland Wing Civil Air Patrol.

Reed, 17, graduated from Carroll Community College this May.

College President Dr. Faye Pappalardo said, “I cannot emphasize enough how proud we are of Jacob. After meeting him, I understand why he was given such a prestigious award.”

The Middle East Region is comprised of eight states from South Carolina to Maryland and the District of Columbia. There are over 6,700 members in the region.

Among Reed’s many accomplishments, he served as the cadet commander of the Carroll Composite Squadron. The squadron earned the Region’s Squadron of Distinction Award for best cadet program.

Reed has attended five Tri-Wing Encampments and was chosen as the cadet commander for the 2008 encampment, which annually trains 160 new cadets. In addition, Reed is very active in the Maryland Wing, recently serving as coordinator for the Wing Cadet Conference.

The CAP, an official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, is a non-profit organization with more than 55,000 members nationwide. The organizations perform 95 percent of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions, as tasked by the Air Force’s Rescue Coordination Center. The CAP was credited with saving 58 lives in 2006. Its volunteers also perform homeland security, disaster relief, and counterdrug missions at the request of federal, state, and local agencies.
