Advisory Committee appointed by County Commissioners
to oversee introduction of a community college campus in the

College opens in vacated Robert Moton Elementary
School on South Center Street as a branch campus of Catonsville
Community College; enrolls 750 students. |
1978 |
Carroll County purchases 80-acre parcel
of land on Washington Road for possible future campus. |
1983 |
Maryland General Assembly passes legislation
permitting Carroll County to apply for state capital funds for
community college construction. |
1984 |
County Commissioners and the Maryland State
Board for Community Colleges approve campus Master Plan. |
1985 |
Groundbreaking ceremony for new Washington
Road campus. |
1989 |
County Commissioners appoint 15-member Future
of Carroll Community College Task Force. |
1990 |
Task Force recommends separation from Catonsville
Community College and appointment of transition team; Washington
Road campus opens in August with Great Hall, Classroom Building
I. College celebrates official dedication of campus on October
21, 1990 with Governor William Donald Schaefer presiding. |
1991 |
Dr. Joseph Shields is appointed Executive
Dean in July, charged with leading the effort to establish Carroll
as Maryland's next community college with accreditation by the
Middle States Association of College and Schools. |
1993 |
College gains independence with appointment
of its first Board of Trustees, degree-granting authority from
the Maryland Higher Education Commission, and candidacy for
accreditation status from the Commission on Higher Education
of the Middle States Association. The Board appoints Dr. Joseph
Shields as the college's first president. The Multi-purpose
Building, funded entirely by the County, is completed. |
1994 |
First graduating class of Carroll Community
College. A total of 172 students graduate, with Commencement
ceremony held May 25. |
1995 |
College serves 10,081 students in credit
and noncredit courses in academic year 1994-95, the first time
annual unduplicated headcount exceeds 10,000. |
1996 |
College gains initial accreditation from
the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association
of Colleges and Schools. |
1997 |
Random House Learning Resources Center opens;
first Random House Book Fair to Benefit the Carroll Community
College Foundation. |
1998 |
Rotary Amphitheater completed. |
1999 |
Dr. Faye Pappalardo becomes college's second
president. |
2000 |
Groundbreaking for a fine and performing
arts center, business training center, and life fitness building
takes place October 4. |
2001 |
College accreditation reaffirmed by the
Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association
of Colleges and Schools. |
2002 |
Robert Annis and Phyllis Barrett Scott Center
for the Fine and Performing Arts, the Business Training Center,
and the Life Fitness Building, officially open in October. College
adopts new brandmark. |
2003 |
College breaks ground for new Nursing and
Allied Health Building on April 3, 2003. Fall credit enrollment
exceeds 3,000 for the first time, with 3,012 students enrolled
as of the official third week statistical date. |
