As the new calendar year is upon us, I welcome the opportunity to share several new ventures that we will embark on during 2009.
Implementation of an important initiative this year will improve the quality of our campus life. On January 2, 2009, our smoke-free campus policy took effect. The college faculty and staff development program is providing special emphasis on health and wellness activities to assist employees who wish to stop smoking.
In addition, the college is forging new partnerships in the credit and non-credit areas that will enable us to be more responsive to regional workforce and economic development needs in our county. The Miller Entrepreneurial Institute will play a major role in this endeavor.
We await the completion of our new classroom building, to open this fall. The building will provide much needed space for students, faculty, and staff. The building fits our existing campus architecture and incorporates several “green” features.
Throughout the year, look for outstanding fine and performing arts programs and events from our theater, art, and music departments. The Random House Book Fair, a signature fundraising event for the college which typically draws three thousand participants, will be held Saturday, March 7, 2009. I hope to see many of you there!
In closing, I wish all of you a blessed New Year.
