Student Selected for Competitive University of Maryland Scholarship

Carroll student Nick Raducha will enter the University of Maryland College Park this fall with a scholarship that will cover tuition and fees for two years at the university. The Transfer Academic Excellence Scholarship was granted to 30 students who were selected out of over 200 candidates. He intends to major in Biochemistry.

“I believe my strong G.P.A. of 3.9, volunteer work and clinical exposure made me a more competitive applicant,” said Raducha. “As Carroll instructor Dr. Raza Khan says ‘do something that sets you apart from others.’” Raducha said that he also established quality relationships with his professors. “They knew me well. Their letters of recommendation were sealed, but I like to imagine there were positive comments contained within.” Raducha volunteers at the Carroll County Health Department with the drug abuse prevention team. “I am passionate about drug prevention for our youth, so this is a good fit. Enjoying oneself is the key to volunteer work,” said Raducha.

“I am also working in clinical research with a plastic surgeon. I want to pursue a career in medicine, so I feel I need to gain exposure to medicine. A shadowing opportunity eventually led to a meaningful research project,” he said.

Raducha says he feels grateful for the scholarship. “I am grateful to my friends who encouraged me, my professors who pushed me, and most importantly, to my family who supported me. I put in the hard work and effort, but these individuals made it possible.”
