On Martin Luther King Day, Carroll students volunteered at Shepherd’s Staff in Westminster. The day was coordinated by AmeriCorps VISTA’s Amanda Gardiner and Coordinator of Experiential Learning and Student Organizations Heather Diehl. Seven students from GREAT Start, Psi Beta, and the Service-Learning Club participated. The group made 11 “no sew” blankets to donate to those in need, stamped envelopes for the “Blessing Closet” and bagged pet food for clients. Students gathered to help others in need and worked well as a team, according to the event coordinators.
“Participants learned the many ways that Shepherd’s Staff helps those in the area who are less fortunate,” said Gardiner. “They also received information about poverty and its common misconceptions. Participants enjoyed a presentation about the importance of Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision for a day of service, including reflections upon how to bridge differences.”
