| Academic and Student Affairs VP Selected for Regional Award | ||

In recognition of his outstanding academic leadership, the National Council of Instructional Administrators (NCIA) has selected Dr. James Ball a regional winner for the 2012 Instructional Leadership Award. Dr. Ball, who is vice president of Academic and Student Affairs, is an unwavering advocate for students as he seeks new and creative ways to support them. The vice president's responsibilities at the college include supervision of credit academic programs, enrollment services, advising, counseling, transfer, financial aid, and student life. "Dr. Ball's contributions have made a substantial impact on Carroll Community College," said College President Dr. Faye Pappalardo. "His leadership and stewardship have been valuable for strong and steady enrollment growth, successful engagement and retention practices, and commitment to faculty development." "I have never worked with a more committed and engaged faculty than we have here at Carroll," said Ball. "To have been nominated by them and supported in that process by Dr. Pappalardo is a tremendous honor, and the highlight of my career. The award is very gratifying but it does not trump the show of support from such an amazing faculty. Any recognition I receive is the direct result of their hard work and their care of students. Their success is my success. This award goes to them." Ball's support for innovation is evident through several academic initiatives. Chemistry and mathematics online tutorial communities were created so that experienced students can mentor other students who are studying these challenging subjects for the first time. Another example is his encouragement of faculty to develop an undergraduate research course in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) area. Dr. Ball has played a lead role in the academic programs to be offered at the Mt. Airy College Center for Health Care Education, a partnership among Carroll, Howard, and Frederick Community Colleges. The three colleges will share resources to meet the training needs of students preparing to enter the burgeoning health care field. The Center is expected to open in fall, 2012.Ball has been a vice president at Carroll since 1999. Prior to joining Carroll, he held various academic and administrative services positions and served for three years as vice president for Student Development at Howard Community College in Columbia, Md. Ball holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees from the University of North Texas. He holds a doctorate degree from Virginia Tech.
