College Introduces Science and Engineering Research Courses

This spring, qualified students with an interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) began courses in academic research that are being offered at Carroll for the first time.

The courses are CHEM-260, ENGR-260, CHEM-261 and ENGR-261. Due to the nature of the STEM field, students need a clear understanding of the scientific literature review process and knowledge of the steps of scientific inquiry. As part of the mentoring process, students will interact with faculty members at four-year institutions to get their "foot-in-the-door" at their research labs in preparation for transfer to baccalaureate colleges and universities.

The pre-requisites for all four courses are obtaining permission of the supervising faculty member or department chair; completing at least one semester at Carroll with a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 or higher; and completing at least one college-level engineering, mathematics or chemistry course with a grade of B or higher.

College President Dr. Faye Pappalardo said, "The college is proud and excited to offer these courses to students who show interest and aptitude for successful entry into careers in science, technology, engineering, and math."

"This course is an important step forward in Carroll's vision to expose all students to authentic research experiences within their first two years of college," said Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs James Ball.

"Undergraduate research engages students in hands-on learning experiences that are authentic and meaningful, and which create opportunities for deepening learning and increasing motivation for learning," said Anne Davis, chair of Carroll's Department of Sciences.
