Speakers Highlight Environmental Scanning Activities

The college's strategic planning process is fully underway with completion of Compass 2015 anticipated in time for the Board of Trustees to endorse the new three-year plan at its June 20, 2012 Board meeting. Dr. Pappalardo designated the Planning Advisory Council as the steering committee for development of Compass 2015, and the Council has been active gathering and discussing the factors that will influence the college over the next three years. These environmental scanning conversations have included a situation analysis or description of the college's current status in terms of enrollment, market position, outcomes, and resources, plus presentations on local occupational demand, technology, the college's financial outlook, and the future direction of the college's credit and continuing education programming. All of these presentations can be accessed under About Carroll/College Planning Documents on the college website.

Two prominent speakers made presentations on campus during the March environmental scanning period. Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, president of the University of Maryland Baltimore County, delivered the keynote address at Biz Expo 2012, the annual business trade show co-sponsored by the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce, the Carroll County Times, and Carroll Community College. Dr. Hrabowski spoke on March 16th in the college's conference center on "Education for the 21st Century: Preparing Students for Careers of the Future."

Anirban Basu, president and CEO of the Sage Policy Group, Inc., a Baltimore economics and business analytics consulting firm, provided the college community with his economic outlook for Carroll County and the region in his presentation in the Scott Center on March 27th. His informative and entertaining presentation linked global and national economic trends to the local financial and labor market outlook pertinent to the college's future.
